Why People Smoke?

Actually I had a thought that I should write about smoking. I wanted to dedicate that article to all the smokers!! I thought of trying my best to illustrate the ill effects of smoking. But the only thing I knew about smoking was ‘Smoking is injurious to health’. So I thought of getting some information from google. I wanted to write it in a way - that would instil fear into smokers mind and tempt them to quit smoking!!!(Probably too much to expect ;)). But after browsing about the ill effects of smoking I shudder to think about it! I quit! :(
I can’t dwell about the hazardous effects of smoking and articulate it!

Why people get addicted to deadly habits like smoking? Why? Why? Why? Even they know that it is deleterious to health but still they enjoy it. There are so many ways to enjoy life still people opt for something which is a slow poison! Hmm...Probably they are risk-takers!?!? I know human beings are mortal, but why to embrace the harbinger of death? God forbid, is dying so cool? Once again, God forbid! Does anyone dream about painful death?? Does this smoker title make you feel good or add feather to your cap? I am aware that these questions will never be answered and asking such kind of questions itself is a stupidity!! Still I ask questions in the hope of getting an explanation, which would help me to end my thought process at least with any of the punctuation marks if not full stop.

PS: One last question to the smoker (by any chance if a smoker reads this) – Have you ever googled about the ‘Ill effects of smoking’? 'Yes'?!!! I can’t believe still you smoke!!!

  1. I think the problem has little to do with cigarettes and smoking. I guess the bigger problem is addiction of any kind, a person getting hooked on something and just cannot get rid it.

You know, several medical practitioners view any form of addiction as a disease. (though this is widely disputed and there's this other view that holds addiction as merely a habit or even a pleasure-seeking activity) Even something like a person's genetic predisposition (the surroundings play a huge part as well) has a role in getting him/her addicted to something.

Inane as it might sound, even ergomania, or workolohism as its better known, is a problem with several people. I think, of lately, I have been meeting many people afflicted with this :) Even something as seemingly harmless as food or shopping can be highly addictive and highly detrimental in the longer run.

Wrt the statement "Have you ever googled about the ‘Ill effects of smoking’? 'Yes'?!!! I can’t believe still you smoke!!!".. I think for an addict all this makes little sense owing to the large amount of psychological and physical dependence that person has on the thing or activity he is addicted to.

Btw.. this is in no way related to what I have written before.. I should recommend the movie 'Thank You for Smoking' to you. The film focuses on the tobacco lobby in the US. And though I am a staunch opponent of smoking myself, the movie momentarily convinced me that probably smoking aint that bad a thing, we have bigger killers all around us!

P.S.: Am I good enough to start guest blogging, or ghost writing as you call it, on 'Perception'?

  2. One question: does your need to blog and my incorrigible habit of responding to people's blog with comments that are longer than the blog itself, qualify as an addiction?

  3. Yes it does. But its an addiction of the harmless kind. While on the topic of smoking I think you should research in more detail and you will figure out the anti smoking campaigns themselves are designed in a way to lure more people into smoking.. just a thought

  4. Thanks for your comments.. PSB and rdarga.

rdarga - I don't know what kind of anti smoking campaigns you are talking about.. all I could get in google was some horrible images!!!Don't understand how can they lure people??

PSB - I do agree with the opinion 'the psychological and physical dependence on the activity masks the cognizance about its negative effects'. But I wonder why people don't think before getting addicted?!

  5. Intuit,

I think it probably starts with a single cigarette (or any other substance for that matter), which seems pretty innocuous and from here it culminates into an addiction. You know the "what harm will one cigarette do" mentality.

I think every addict at some level knows he/she has to quit and every cigarette is the last one and decides he ll quit tomorrow. But this never happens thanks to the psychological and physical dependence.

  6. Yeah.. makes sense! Thanks for taking time to read and comment on my blog :)

I am eagerly waiting for your blog! So that I can bask in the glory of making someone write(atleast some percent of the credit!?) and forget the disappointment of not being able to make an effective anti-smoking campaign! ;)
